ABOUT ANDREW DUFF

 

Since July 1999 Andrew Duff has been the Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parliament for the East of England (representing the counties of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Suffolk and Norfolk).

He is spokesman on constitutional affairs for the European Liberal, Democrat and Reform Group (ELDR), and Vice-President of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee.

From 1999-2000 he was a member of the Convention which drafted the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union as well as Rapporteur for the European Parliament on the Charter.

In February 2002 Andrew Duff was elected the ELDR representative on the constitutional Convention on the Future of Europe. He chairs the Liberal caucus in the Convention. He is also Vice-President of the European Parliament delegation to the Convention.

Before being elected to the European Parliament, Andrew Duff was Director of the Federal Trust for Education and Research (1993-99), one of Europe's leading think-tanks on European integration. He is a member of the Board of TEPSA (Trans-European Policy Studies Association) and of the steering committee of the International European Movement.

He is the author or editor of many books on European integration, including Understanding the Euro (1998), The Treaty of Amsterdam (1997), Reforming the European Union (1997) and Maastricht and Beyond: Building the European Union (1994).

Born on Christmas Day 1950, Andrew Duff was educated at Sherborne School, Dorset, St John's College, Cambridge and l'Institut d'études européennes, l'Université Libre de Bruxelles. He has the degrees of Master of Arts and Master of Literature from Cambridge University.

He was appointed OBE for political services in 1997. He was Vice-President of the Liberal Democrats from 1994-97 and a City Councillor in Cambridge from 1982-90.

Making the EU more democratic

Andrew is Vice-President of the European Parliament delegation to the Constitutional Convention on the Future of Europe.


Rights for EU citizens

Andrew drafted the Charter of Fundamental Rights which has strengthened the rights of all the citizens of the European Union.


Turkey

Andrew is working for improved links between the EU and Turkey, to encourage improvements in Turkey's human rights record and to enhance its democracy.
