Andrew Duff takes his seat in European Parliament

Taking up his seat today (Tuesday) in the European Parliament at Strasbourg, Andrew Duff said:

"It is a great privilege to be the first Liberal Democrat Euro-MP for Eastern England. I will work to the best of my ability to represent the interests of the constituency at the level of the European Union. We are an enterprising and successful region that deserves to be among the top regions of Europe.

"In Brussels and Strasbourg I shall fight for a new start for the European Union. It has to become stronger and more efficient to square up to the economic, social and security problems that Europe faces.

"And the Union has to become more open and democratic in order to earn the popular support it needs to be effective.

"Nobody in Eastern England should now doubt that they have a strong voice speaking up on their behalf in Europe.

"I and my fellow Liberal Democrat MEPs will be powerful advocates of Britain taking its rightful and decisive role in European affairs."
