* In a far-reaching measure to improve pedestrian safety, the European Parliament has passed a directive that will ban bull bars on cars with immediate effect and make anti-lock braking on all cars mandatory by 2005. Local Euro-MP/local campaigner XY, said "Dozens of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured each year on this area's roads. But, in future, pedestrians will be a lot safer as a result of this immediate ban on bull bars and the introduction of ABS-brakes on all new cars. Bull bars serve no real purpose on modern-day cars, except as decoration. Yet they are responsible for horrific injuries and many deaths. The car industry has worked closely with the European Parliament to design legislation that is workable and which will make our roads safer."
